Chairman's Message

Raising the bar is easier than you think…what do you want to be known for?

Stephanie KirkseyThese are changing times for each of us.  Some of our chambers are doing better than others, and frankly, some of us are navigating the changing waters of this profession better than others. Wherever you are on the continuum, I think we can all agree: if we really want to get out of this economic downtown and support each other through ongoing transition, the solution is not necessarily to do more of what we have always done.

As vice chair and now MDD chair, the past few months have been spent talking about Circle of Champions, the sales conference, social media, tracks at the ACCE Convention, etc.  Threaded through each discussion has been a preeminent “aha” for me: many ACCE assumptions may be a bit outdated.  We are not just membership people anymore.  Regardless of our respective job titles, we are each called to be a little bit sales, a little bit marketing, a little bit customer service, a little bit event planner, a little bit therapist, a little bit matchmaker, a little bit problem solver, a little bit idea generator, a little bit creative thinker… The list goes on and on.

I recently read (and enjoyed!) Linchpin Are you Indispensible by Seth Godin.  I want to share two notable quotes with you, which I hope serve as catalyst to the work we are doing, and will do, this coming year:

“Indispensable linchpins are not waiting for instructions, but instead, figuring out what to do next.  If you have a job where someone tells you what to do next, you’ve just given up the chance to create value.”

And…

"There are only two choices.  Win by being more ordinary, more standard and cheaper.  Or win by being faster, more remarkable and more human.”

We are not just membership people anymore.  We are all artists and game changers, remarkable in our own way.  Clearly, your chamber would be a different organization without your dynamic and one-of-a-kind energy.

I challenge everyone to think about a few things…

  • What would make you impossibly good at your job?
  • What would make you indispensable to your chamber and your members?
  • Are you working everyday to invent, connect, create and make things happen? Or, are you on automatic pilot?
  • Do you look for the chance to delight your members every day?

There is no right or wrong answer . . . just food for thought.

I choose the latter.  Let’s all be linchpins.

Samples

ACCE's samples database is one of the most used resources located at www.acce.org.  Once a quarter, you will receive an RFS (request for samples) as a separate email. The MDD advisory team will determine what samples are needed and once they are collected we will enter them in our searchable database.

New! You can now rate samples on our website. Once more samples are rated, you will start to see the highest-rated samples at the top of your search results. Look for the first RFS this October.

Circle of Champions

We would like to welcome everyone that signed up for the Circle of Champions (CoC) during the 2010 conference in Milwaukee.   The goals for the Circle of Champions membership division for the up coming year is to work with the members to better understand what they need from the COC, how we can produce what the members need to communicate and reach out to help anyone that we can.  We have already started working on the conference for March of 2011.  We welcome any ideas comments or suggestions.  Please fill free to contact me for anything.

National Sales Contest  2nd Quarter entries due December 10, 2010
